I guess I don't know everything...

It seems that Senator Kennedy is getting buried in Arlington National Cemetery. And I thought I knew the qualifications. He was the brother of two serving officers of World War II, one of which didn't return. But I couldn't find the military service that Ted Kennedy had performed. Must have missed it.

He was Army '51-'52. His daddy made sure he stayed in Paris...as far away from Korea as possible. He also never rose above the rank of private.

I'll do ya one better...he originally signed up for 4 years, but Joe Sr. got him out at 2.

Wait, didn't Teddy once give George Bush a load of crap for serving far away from the war zone during Vietnam? Hmmm.

I hear Johnnie Walker is going to have to raise their prices to offset the income loss caused by Kennedy's death.

Thanks for the information, and that makes a difference. Of course, that he served and where aren't being promoted anywhere in his biography - since they people that love him don't honor service to the country. I understand so much more now. Thanks.

You know ... love or hate the Kennedy's, and Ted in particular certainly didn't represent me, the JFK/Teddy generation did serve.

I'm sure JFK could have gotten an out, but he served on tiny little torpedo boats in WWII and saw plenty of action and ended up shipwrecked after a Japanese destroyer ran his little boat over.

Brother Joseph Kennedy, Jr. served as a pilot in Britain in WWII and not only saw action but died in an experimental bomber accident.

Bobby Kennedy was in V-12 during WWII (the ROTC of WWII) until the war ended. But he did serve, he was just too young to make it into action.

Teddy may have stayed away from the action, but he did serve.

He is eligible under the existing rules.

Senators who spend 2 years in the Army and 40 years in the Senate qualify for Arlington. It isn't PFC Kennedy that is being buried there, in a sense.

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Thurgood Marshall, who never served in uniform, is buried in Arlington. Arlington is considered a national treasure and is managed a bit differently from the other cemeteries in the system.

Specifically, the guidance that qualifies Senator Kennedy is this:

g. Any former member of the Armed Forces who served on active duty (other than for training) and who held any of the following positions:

1. An elective office of the U.S. Government
2. Office of the Chief Justice of the United States or of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
3. An office listed, at the time the person held the position, in 5 USC 5312 or 5313 (Levels I and II of the Executive Schedule).
4. The chief of a mission who was at any time during his/her tenure classified in Class I under the provisions of Section 411, Act of 13 August 1946, 60 Stat. 1002, as amended (22 USC 866) or as listed in State Department memorandum dated March 21, 1988.

Arlington may be a National Treasure...but everyone buried there isn't....
